eKoNEs was funded by General Secretariat for Research and Technology, Greek Ministry of Development, in the context of the Regional Operational Program of Crete (PEP-Crete), Action line 1.2 “Research and Development consortia in strategic priority application domains”. Project partners include the Department of Applied Information Technologies and Multimedia – Technological Education Institution of Crete (Project Coordinator), the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering – Technical University of Crete, the Department of Music and Acoustic Technology – Technological Education Institution of Crete, Forthnet S.A and Anixe, S.A.

eKoNEΣ: Description

The main objective of the project eΚοΝΕΣ is to contribute on the development of the theoretical basis and the technological infrastructure upon which electronic villages or electronic communities of local interest will be established and function. The goal of such villages / communities is to bring together the “villagers” (i.e. enterprises, chambers, government and citizens) in a virtual electronic environment wherein they can promote innovative actions, services and products through their upgraded technological infrastructure. The results of the eΚοΝΕΣ project are illustrated with the use of a scenario on the tourism sector. In the future eΚοΝΕΣ will escalate its application to other sectors of the local industry.

eKoNEΣ: Results

Main results: The results of the project are divided into 3 main categories: (a) Research results which contribute on the promotion of knowledge and experience in specific knowledge domains and (b) Technological results which concern the development of the a platform for the establishment and functionality of a broadband virtual community.

In the content of the research results the project studies specific matters of basic research in different knowledge domains of computing. In particular, concerning networking eΚοΝΕΣ studies ad-hoc approaches to the development of computer grids and the services to support them. Furthermore in the context of collaboration with the use of computers and H.C.I. the project studies advanced and non-classical interaction metaphors which are appropriate for incorporating structural, spatial and behavioral characteristics of electronic communities. Tools have been developed which support new collaboration techniques. Web services technology have been studied in order to support the electronic community services in the web.

The technological results sum up to: (a) development of the technological infrastructure to support the virtual coexistence of partners in order to collaborate, to develop new products and services of high added value, and (b) demonstration of the added value that eΚοΝΕΣ brings to the tourism industry in the region of Crete.
